On a gentle rise in central Krapina, St Nicholas’ Parish Church was completed in 1903 to designs by Josip Vancaš. This Neo-Gothic building replaced an earlier church, first recorded in a document of 1311. One tangible remnant of its Gothic predecessor survives: the sacristy beneath the bell tower, with a Gothic vault and a late-Gothic doorframe. The church also preserves Franjo Heferer’s 1903 organ and valuable goldsmith’s works transferred from the earlier church inventory. It is especially rewarding for visitors who want to see a medieval fragment incorporated into the architectural language of the turn of the twentieth century, right in Krapina’s centre.
