Stari grad Krapina is a complex medieval fortified settlement located northeast of the Krapinčica stream on a hill at 270 meters elevation. First mentioned in the 14th century, the fortress's Romanesque core was likely built during the 12th or early 13th century. The fortification served as a core with economic and residential buildings plus a chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity, organized into upper and lower sections. Throughout history it was controlled by numerous feudal lords including John Corvinus and the Counts of Celje and Keglevich. It was severely damaged by the 1775 earthquake and subsequently began to deteriorate. Today only parts remain: gate towers, walls, fortress complexes, and a palace still under roof. It is protected as immovable cultural property under designation Z-4061.
