About this place

Zlatar Bistrica stands on the right bank of the Krapina River in central Hrvatsko Zagorje, five kilometres south of Zlatar. The settlement grew around a useful road and rail junction where routes branch towards Zlatar, Marija Bistrica, Konjščina and Bedekovčina, while the Zagreb–Zabok–Varaždin railway passes directly through town. Its main religious landmark is the parish church of St John the Baptist, completed in 1997—a contemporary building that contrasts with the older Baroque churches found elsewhere in Zagorje. The Krapina River and the relatively level agricultural land along its valley also give Zlatar Bistrica a different profile from neighbouring hilltop settlements. It works especially well as a starting point for eastern Zagorje: trains connect it with Zabok, and the D24 and D29 corridors lead towards Konjščina, Novi Marof, Zlatar and Marija Bistrica. A short visit can combine the centre, the church and the river valley before continuing by rail or road to another nearby Zagorje destination.

Zlatar Bistrica occupies the flatter Krapina valley at an elevation of 158 metres, so river land, fields and transport corridors shape the settlement more strongly than the steep slopes associated with much of Zagorje. Its position between Bedekovčina, Zlatar, Konjščina and Marija Bistrica explains its role as a local road and railway junction. The town’s economic identity includes farming and livestock alongside meat processing, timber, construction-material and electrical industries. The parish church of St John the Baptist, built in 1997, adds a distinctly modern architectural marker to the centre. This combination of river plain, manufacturing tradition and railway access sets Zlatar Bistrica apart from the historic hill towns nearby.

Things to do

Start a compact visit at the 1997 parish church of St John the Baptist, the most prominent modern building in Zlatar Bistrica. Continue from the centre to the railway station, a reminder of how closely the settlement’s development is tied to the Zagreb–Zabok–Varaždin line. Then walk through the flatter part of town towards the right bank of the Krapina and compare its open river landscape with the hills rising towards Zlatar, five kilometres away. To extend the day, take a train towards Zabok or follow the road towards Marija Bistrica; both options begin at the transport junction that defines Zlatar Bistrica. This sequence links the contemporary church, railway heritage and valley geography without demanding steep climbs.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Zlatar Bistrica station lies on the railway that connects the town with Zagreb via Zabok and continues in the other direction towards Konjščina, Novi Marof and Varaždin. For the timetable period from 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026, HŽ Passenger Transport lists Zlatar Bistrica as the origin of several services towards Zabok and Zagreb. Road access centres on the D24 towards Konjščina and Novi Marof and the D29 towards Zlatar and Marija Bistrica. The combination of a station, a broad river valley and two state-road corridors makes arriving without a car considerably easier here than in many smaller Zagorje settlements.
