Hellenbach Castle in Marija Bistrica

Hellenbach Castle is a neoclassical country house of 1786, set in parkland near Marija Bistrica.

About

Completed in 1786, Hellenbach Castle is among the preserved early neoclassical country houses of north-western Croatia. This single-storey building has a portico on its principal western façade and is arranged around a central hall lit as a space of double height. Its main axis runs from the entrance and octagonal foyer through the hall and salon to the terrace. The estate passed to the Hellenbach family in 1851 through the marriage of Lazar Hellenbach and Klotilde Jelačić. As the castle remains private property, it is best appreciated from outside with due respect for the residents’ privacy. Its grounds were reshaped as an English landscape park during the nineteenth century.
