About this place

Zagorska Sela occupies the far western edge of Krapina-Zagorje County beside the River Sutla and the Slovenian border. The village is also the administrative seat of a municipality containing twelve other settlements, including Miljana, Bojačno, Poljana Sutlanska and Luke Poljanske. A municipality named Sela existed by 1886, while the modern Municipality of Zagorska Sela was re-established in 1952. Local identity is rooted in the Sutla valley, border hills and scattered religious heritage; the municipal inventory highlights the Špičak archaeological site and the 17th-century Chapel of St Martin at Bojačno. Along the river lies the Croatian part of the Sutla Tourist Zone – Valley of Health Springs, created by agreement between Zagorska Sela and neighbouring Podčetrtek in 2000. This cross-border setting makes it natural to combine the village with Kumrovec, Miljana and Slovenia’s thermal district, although sights are dispersed across several settlements. Public buses do serve the municipality, but some operate only during the school term. A car is consequently the more practical way to connect Špičak, the river valley and outlying chapels.

Zagorska Sela developed on the Croatian side of the Sutla border within a municipality of thirteen dispersed settlements. Here the River Sutla is more than a frontier: since 2000 it has linked the municipality with Podčetrtek through the Sutla Tourist Zone – Valley of Health Springs. The area’s municipal history reaches back to the Municipality of Sela in 1886, while the present local authority was re-established in 1952. The municipality identifies the Špičak archaeological site among its landmarks, alongside the 17th-century Chapel of St Martin in Bojačno. Central Zagorska Sela therefore functions as a starting point for a wider mosaic of river valley, wooded hills, chapels and small villages rather than as a compact historic centre filled with urban monuments.

Things to do

Begin in the centre of Zagorska Sela, then descend towards the Sutla and the Croatian side of the cross-border tourist zone established with Podčetrtek in 2000. The Špičak archaeological site, specifically listed by the municipality as a local landmark, makes a logical second stop. For religious heritage, continue to Bojačno and its 17th-century Chapel of St Martin. The route can then extend through Miljana, Poljana Sutlanska and Luke Poljanske, three settlements within the same municipality that reveal the dispersed pattern of the Sutla landscape. As these places do not line a single pedestrian street, the most effective visit combines short walks with drives between individual villages.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Zagorska Sela is included in Krapina-Zagorje County’s public bus system, whose official listings name Presečki grupa as the operator. The Miljana–Zabok railway station service calls at Sela II, but that particular route is marked as operating only during the school term. Another registered line connects the Zagorska Sela area with the Tuhelj–Desinić corridor, while timetables also show a connection towards Kumrovec. Travel in 2026 therefore requires checking whether school-term or holiday operation applies. Because municipal settlements such as Bojačno, Miljana, Poljana Sutlanska and Luke Poljanske are scattered across the border hills, a car remains the simplest option for a complete tour of the municipality and the Sutla valley.
