Veliki Tabor Castle

Veliki Tabor crowns Košnički Hum at 333 metres above sea level, overlooking Hrvatsko zagorje and part of Slovenia. Its oldest sections date from the 15th century, while the first written reference appears in a 1502 charter. The Rattkay family built and enlarged the complex through the 16th century and held it until 1793. The central fortress served both residential and defensive purposes; four semicircular towers and rooms along the north wall were added later. Now part of the Museums of Hrvatsko zagorje, Veliki Tabor offers a restored setting in which to explore fortified architecture and museum displays.
