About
The ruins of Cesargrad occupy a prominent ridge of Cesargradska Gora above Klanjec, looking over the Sutla Valley and the Croatian-Slovenian border. The fortress developed in the Middle Ages, while Klanjec grew below it as its settlement. Among its lords were the Erdődy family. After damage during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1573, Ban Toma Erdődy abandoned the fortress and built Novi Dvori near Klanjec in 1603. Cesargrad consequently lost its residential role and gradually fell into ruin. A 2.4-kilometre Klanjec–Cesargrad hiking trail reaches the site, making it well suited to visitors combining local history with a walk through the Zagorje hills.
