Miljana Castle
About
In the municipality of Zagorska Sela, Miljana Castle developed from the late sixteenth through the eighteenth century as an estate of the Ratkaj family. Its one-storey Baroque complex encloses a courtyard with four wings, while the ground-floor entrance wing carries a bell tower. Black-and-blue painted façades give the building its distinctive presence in the Zagorje landscape. The rooms retain a cycle of Rococo wall paintings with allegorical scenes and landscapes, attributed to Antun Lerchinger and collaborators; Rococo tiled stoves are also recorded. The castle was restored in 1979–82, and municipal records describe further restoration work. From the surrounding area, visitors can appreciate it best as a coherent historic architectural ensemble.
