About this place

Topolje is a Baranja village in the municipality of Draž, set between cultivated lowlands and Topoljski Dunavac, an old Danube backwater extending towards the Hungarian border. Its defining landmark stands outside the village: the Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1722, while the Church of Saint Mark the Evangelist, dating from 1890, is within the settlement itself. The local parish of Saints Peter and Paul traces its history to 1247 and was re-established in 1775, giving this small community an unusually long religious heritage. Beside the backwater lies Puškaš, a retreat associated with Baranja anglers and weekend cottages; local planning documents provide for a landing stage, marina and a 2,000-metre rowing course there. Topolje also preserves Šokac heritage through the traditional Šokačka House, where the material and spiritual culture of the village’s Šokac community has been presented in its original setting. A visit therefore links an isolated Baroque church, village ethnography and the waterside landscape of the Dunavac rather than conventional urban sightseeing.

Topolje’s character comes from two contrasting settings: a Šokac village on the Baranja plain and the waters of Topoljski Dunavac. The 1722 Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands apart from the settlement in open countryside, while the 1890 Church of Saint Mark marks the village itself. Topolje’s Šokačka House preserves objects and customs of the local Šokac community in their original rural context. Puškaš, beside the Dunavac, adds angling, boats and weekend cottages to the village’s identity, while municipal plans envisage landing and rowing infrastructure along the water. This combination of religious heritage, Šokac culture and an old Danube backwater sets Topolje apart from the wine-growing villages on Baranja’s higher ground.

Things to do

The Baroque Church of St Peter and St Paul stands apart from the village on the road between Topolje and Gajić, making its secluded setting part of the visit. Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned it in 1722 as a votive church after victory over the Ottomans, while the parish was re-established in 1775. Inside are gravestones, the oldest dated 1721, and an organ made in 1905 by Pécs organ builder Josef Angster. Afterwards, visit the permanent ethnographic display in Topolje’s Šokac House.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Topolje is reached through the local road network of Draž municipality, while the Topoljski Dunavac area connects with county road Ž4019. A car or bicycle is the practical way to link Saint Mark’s Church in the village, the detached Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the Puškaš waterfront. Passenger landing stages, marinas, ramps and boat moorings are included in planning documents for the Dunavac, but these proposed facilities do not constitute a scheduled passenger service. Access to the backwater relies on local roads and waterside approaches, so conditions near the fishing areas are worth checking before setting out.
