Sveti Urban
About this place
Sveti Urban is a settlement in the Municipality of Štrigova, with 380 residents recorded in the 2021 Census. Its identity is closely tied to vineyards and to St Urban, patron saint of vine growers and winemakers. On 25 May 2025, the chapel in Sveti Urban hosted its traditional celebration and Mass, followed by a procession to bless the vineyards and their growers. The same custom was documented on 26 May 2024, organised by the Parish of Štrigova and the Hortus Croatiae winegrowers’ and winemakers’ association. Štampar Winery is at Sveti Urban 2, while Vina Preiner is at number 275. Both appeared in Urbanovo’s 2025 Open Cellars programme, alongside Cmrečnjak Winery at Sveti Urban 273. Held each May, Urbanovo brings together the Pušipel Festival, open-cellar days and the feast of St Urban with its Wine Ball. Sveti Urban is therefore best approached as a wine-road stop where working cellars, the chapel and the May celebrations meet in one small Štrigova-area settlement.
In the Štrigova wine country, Sveti Urban is defined by its chapel to the patron saint of vine growers and by the nearby addresses of Štampar, Preiner and Cmrečnjak wineries. On 25 May 2025, a procession carrying the statue of St Urban left the chapel for the vineyards, where growers and vines received a blessing. Štampar Winery is at number 2, Vina Preiner at 275 and Cmrečnjak at 273. This close grouping of cellars explains why all three addresses appeared in the 2025 Urbanovo programme, whose May events include Open Cellars days and the Pušipel Festival.

Things to do
Begin at the Chapel of St Urban, where its setting among the vines immediately explains why the village bears the name of the winegrowers’ patron saint. Continue along the hilly local roads to the cellars and tasting rooms of the Međimurje Wine Road, looking in particular for Pušipel, the grape most closely associated with this region. From Sveti Urban, carry on through Štrigova towards Mađerkin Breg for the route’s panoramic finale. The 27-metre tower places its upper platform at 361 metres above sea level, and cyclists will find a repair point beside it. On the return through Štrigova, stop at the Church of St Jerome, where the sanctuary contains 18th-century frescoes by Ivan Ranger.

Practical information
Getting there and around
A car or bicycle is the practical way to reach Sveti Urban, as the settlement is dispersed across Štrigova’s vineyard hills and its chapel, cellars and viewpoints do not cluster around a single square. The wine-country approach runs through Štrigova, from where the Međimurje Wine Road extends towards Banfi and the Slovenian border before looping back via Sveti Urban and Stanetinec towards Lopatinec. Cyclists should expect climbing on the narrow, winding vineyard roads: the wine-road hills range from roughly 200 to 340 metres above sea level. The bicycle service point beside the Mađerkin Breg lookout, at Robadje 91, provides a useful stop near the route.
