Železna Gora
About this place
Železna Gora is a wine-growing settlement in the Municipality of Štrigova, among the rolling hills of Upper Međimurje near the Slovenian border. Houses, vineyard cottages and vines spread across slopes counted among the prized sites of the Međimurje wine region, alongside Sveti Urban, Banfi, Prekopa and Dragoslavec. Visitors come less for a single monumental sight than for a landscape shaped by vineyards, narrow roads and far-reaching views. A public but undeveloped panoramic point stands by the school, while a marked walking route between Sveti Martin spa and Štrigova passes directly through the village. From Železna Gora, the trail continues past Zmajev Vrt to the Međimurje Hiking Trail, the 300-metre summit of Štrigovčak and Štrigova’s Church of Saint Jerome. The village is also a natural stop on the Međimurje Wine Road, associated with pušipel, sauvignon, grüner silvaner, Rhine riesling and other regional varieties. County roads approach from Brezovec and continue towards Gornji Mihaljevec, making a car the easiest way to explore the scattered hills and wineries.
Železna Gora is more than a village with a wine-growing reputation: Croatia’s national viticulture regulations explicitly list it among the recognised sites of the Međimurje wine district. Its identity comes from working vineyards, family cellars and tasting rooms scattered along hilly roads, rather than from a compact historic centre. The Belović cellar and tasting room at number 2b grows 13 grape varieties and overlooks the vineyards and nearby Štrigova. Tomšić’s wine-growing and cellar operation occupies number 56, about fifteen kilometres from Čakovec. This pattern gives Železna Gora its distinctive character, with cultivated slopes, winemaking and cellar visits sharing the same small rural landscape.

Things to do
The most complete way to explore Železna Gora is the marked walking route linking Sveti Martin spa with Štrigova. From the village, follow the road past the ceramic Zmajev Vrt towards Grabrovnik, join the Međimurje Hiking Trail and climb Štrigovčak, a 300-metre summit. The route continues into Štrigova, where the restored Church of Saint Jerome contains frescoes by Ivan Ranger. Devote the second part of the day to the Međimurje Wine Road: Železna Gora is one of its recognised vineyard sites, and tasting pušipel provides a direct introduction to the local terroir. For a brief pause, stop by the panoramic point at the school, bearing in mind that it is not equipped as a formal lookout.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Železna Gora sits where the local road network meets two significant county roads. Road ŽC 2004 connects Brezovec with Železna Gora over 3.970 kilometres, while ŽC 2009 runs from the village through Gornji Mihaljevec to Gornji Hrašćan for 11.855 kilometres. From Čakovec, a practical approach follows the road towards Štrigova and onward through the wine-growing hills; the official directions for Mađerkin Breg also specify an approach via Železna Gora. The narrow hill roads call for slower driving, particularly when agricultural vehicles are present. A car offers the greatest flexibility, while walkers can use the marked Sveti Martin spa–Železna Gora–Štrigova route.
