Štrigova
About this place
Štrigova is the wine-growing heart of Upper Međimurje, about 20 kilometres north of Čakovec, right by the Slovenian border. Its municipality spreads across vineyard-covered hills, orchards and wooded pockets, with a cluster of small villages linked by the local wine route and its cellar doors. The defining high point is Mađerkin breg at 341 metres above sea level, only 3.5 metres below Mohokos, Međimurje’s highest summit. A cycling information centre and lookout opened there in 2022; its laminated-timber structure rises 28 metres, with the visitor platform set at 21 metres. From the village centre, routes also lead towards St Jerome’s Church, built on the site of an earlier church recorded before the 15th century. Štrigova’s character rests as much on its vineyard scenery and sacred heritage as on the new tower overlooking the rolling northern edge of Međimurje. Mađerkin breg forms part of the area’s cycling offer, while Štampar Winery and its tasting room are among its featured excursion stops. This blend of vines, church heritage and panoramic architecture makes Štrigova a natural base for exploring north-western Međimurje.
Štrigova is not centred on a single grand square; its identity spreads across wine-growing hills and hamlets beside the Slovenian border. Local vineyards form part of the Međimurje Wine Road, and Pušipel has developed into both the signature grape and a protected regional brand. The churches of St Jerome and St Mary Magdalene anchor the religious heritage, while the newer World Centre of Pušipel connects wine with Upper Međimurje’s history, customs and stories. The Štrigova subdialect is listed in Croatia’s Register of Cultural Heritage, meaning that the area’s distinctiveness is also heard in everyday speech. Vineyards around Sveti Urban, Železna Gora and Banfi complete a setting that differs sharply from the flatter landscapes of Lower Međimurje.
Things to see
The Mađerkin Breg lookout rises 27 metres, incorporates four rest levels and has 104 steps leading to a rooftop platform at 361 metres above sea level. Wind organs occupy its central section, and cyclists can use a repair point at the base. In Štrigova, the World Centre of Pušipel interprets the development of local viticulture, historic and modern cellar techniques, and the character of the Međimurje Wine Road. The Church of St Jerome is noted for its Baroque interior, while the Church of St Mary Magdalene helps define the village skyline. Nearby Grabrovnik contains the Osojnički Gallery, an international open-air sculpture collection featuring works by its founder Vesna Osojnički and artists from several countries.

Things to do
Start in central Štrigova with the churches of St Mary Magdalene and St Jerome, then use the World Centre of Pušipel to learn about Međimurje grape varieties, vineyard tools and cellar work. Continue through the vineyards towards Robadje and Mađerkin Breg. Climbing the lookout’s 104 steps reveals views across Croatia, Slovenia, Austria and Hungary, while wind-powered organ pipes built into the structure add an unusual soundtrack. Štampar Winery stands roughly 100 metres west of the tower and is a natural stop for a pre-arranged tasting. Complete the day by following the Međimurje Wine Road through Sveti Urban or Železna Gora, then choose Terbotz or Kavana Orijent for a meal rooted in the cooking of northern Croatia.
Food and drink
Terbotz restaurant on the Međimurje Wine Road pairs regional food with wines from the Jakopić family estate. Its cooking includes seasonal soups, game, fish, meat dishes and desserts, with ingredients drawn from the property’s garden and orchard and from nearby woodland. Kavana Orijent provides another specific dining stop in the Štrigova area. Wine visits are best arranged in advance at cellars such as Štampar, Cmrečnjak, Dvanajščak-Kozol, Lovrec or Jakopić, since tasting rooms do not necessarily operate like all-day bars. Try Pušipel either in a fresh style or as a more mature wine carrying the Prestige designation, ideally alongside recognisably Međimurje dishes rather than a generic international menu.

Practical information
Practical information
The Štrigova Municipality Tourist Board is based at Štrigova 103 and provides local information on the lookout, wine road and events. Arrange family-winery tastings before arrival, particularly outside weekends and major occasions such as Urbanovo. For Mađerkin Breg, wear footwear suitable for an uphill gravel approach; cars can follow the marked route through Štrigova, while coaches stop at the designated parking area below the hill and passengers continue approximately 700 metres on foot. The municipality’s useful-number list includes Štrigova Police Station, whereas the duty pharmacy and main bus terminal are in Čakovec. Because vineyards and attractions are dispersed among the hills, a car or bicycle makes the area substantially easier to explore.
Parking
For the Mađerkin breg lookout, cars are left at the foot of the hill, followed by an approximately 700-metre walk along a gravel road. Coaches must approach through Sveti Urban, where dedicated coach parking is provided; the other access roads are too narrow. Brown tourist signs guide drivers either through Štrigova and Banfi or via Sveti Urban towards Robadje. A new road and car park were completed in Štrigova in 2026, receiving their occupancy permit on 21 September. It therefore makes sense to park in the village while visiting its churches, then treat Mađerkin breg as a separate stop on a drive through the wine hills.
Getting there and around
Štrigova stands about 20 kilometres north of Čakovec near the Croatian-Slovenian border, with the most practical approach following the roads of Upper Međimurje. Čakovec is the region’s principal bus and rail hub; for the final leg to Štrigova, check the available local coach connection or continue by car or taxi. Driving also makes it easier to reach Sveti Urban, Železna Gora, Banfi and Robadje, where many cellars and the Mađerkin Breg lookout are located. Cyclists have access to a repair point at the tower but should expect repeated climbs and descents throughout the wine country. Coaches use the parking area below Mađerkin Breg, leaving passengers with an approximately 700-metre walk along the gravel access road.
