Robadje
About this place
Robadje is a vineyard village in the rolling hills of Štrigova municipality, at Croatia’s far north-western edge beside the Slovenian border. Its defining landmark rises on Mađerkin Breg: a 25-metre lookout with a viewing platform 18 metres above the ground, built in a landscape officially recognised for its panoramic value. A musical installation called Goričko sviralo was added in 2024, allowing visitors to hear međimurska popevka, the traditional song of Međimurje. From the hill, the view sweeps across the vineyards of Upper Međimurje and, in clear weather, beyond the national border. Robadje has no compact centre lined with conventional sights; houses, wine cellars and vines are scattered along narrow hillside roads between Štrigova, Banfi and Sveti Urban. This pattern makes the village particularly rewarding on foot or by bicycle rather than as a quick roadside stop. A walk to Mađerkin Breg can be combined with nearby Tkalec Manor and the wine estates of the Štrigova area. Coaches must approach the foot of the hill through Sveti Urban because the other local roads are too narrow.
Robadje is a settlement in the Municipality of Štrigova where Mađerkin breg has been developed as the Goričko sviralo cycling-information centre and viewpoint. Its 2018 building permit places the project on plots in the cadastral area of Robadje, within a landscape valued for the panoramas of Upper Međimurje. The viewpoint’s address is Robadje 91. In March 2024, Goričko sviralo, a sound installation built into the viewing tower, was presented on Mađerkin breg. The site is also linked with Emilija Krauthaker, a Hungarian ballerina who settled there in 1940.

Things to do
Begin at the prepared area below Mađerkin Breg, where a roughly 700-metre gravel climb leads to the lookout. From the platform, listen to Goričko sviralo and trace the pattern of Robadje’s vineyards across the slopes. Hikers can then continue through the village towards Sveti Urban; a documented walking route links Mađerkin Breg, Robadje, Sveti Urban, the Cmrečnjak winery and Štrigovčak before descending to Štrigova. A shorter outing stays close to the hill and nearby Tkalec Manor, avoiding the longer descent towards the municipal centre. For cyclists, the narrow undulating lanes deliver a characteristically Upper Međimurje ride, though blind bends require particular care around cars and agricultural vehicles.

Practical information
Getting there and around
The simplest driving approaches to Robadje run through Štrigova and Banfi or via Sveti Urban, following the brown signs for Mađerkin Breg. Cars are left at the bottom of the hill, with the final approximately 700 metres to the lookout completed on foot along a gravel track. Coaches must arrive through Sveti Urban, where suitable parking is provided; the alternative approach is too narrow for large vehicles. Robadje is included in the Štrigova municipality bus timetable published by the regional transport group, so travellers should select a departure for their particular date. A car or bicycle remains more practical for combining the vineyards, Tkalec Manor and the lookout because these points are dispersed across the hillsides.
