Špišić Bukovica
About this place
Špišić Bukovica sits eight kilometres northwest of Virovitica, where the plain begins to rise into the vineyards and woods of Bilogora. This municipal centre is associated with grain, tobacco, vines and chamomile, while medicinal plants receive a contemporary interpretation at the House of Tea – Oasis of Peace visitor centre. Its tea theme extends through tasting pavilions, museum displays, a reading room, an education hall and a souvenir shop. Older landmarks include the 1785 Ladislav Špišić manor and the parish church dedicated to St John the Baptist, while historical records mention the settlement as Bakva in 1394. The wider municipality stretches from Bilogora’s slopes across cultivated lowland toward the Drava, giving Špišić Bukovica a more varied setting than a purely lowland Slavonian village. It works particularly well as a day trip from Virovitica, combining a tea-focused visit, a short walk through the centre and a drive toward the vineyards at Bilogora’s edge.
Špišić Bukovica developed where the Virovitica plain meets Bilogora, at roughly 130 metres above sea level. Its present name is linked to the noble Špišić family, which acquired the estate in 1749 and built its manor toward the end of the eighteenth century. Tobacco and chamomile in the lowland, together with vines and orchards on Bilogora’s slopes, define the village’s agricultural profile. Municipal planning documents identify the Ladislav Špišić manor in Vinogradska Street, the parish church, cemetery chapel, old school and museum collection as heritage proposed for protection. The newer House of Tea has become the settlement’s contemporary emblem by turning local medicinal-plant production into an educational visitor experience.

Things to do
Start at the House of Tea – Oasis of Peace at Vinogradska 1b, whose museum, reading room, education space, shop and separate tasting pavilions explore tea and medicinal plants. After a tasting, walk along the same street to the Ladislav Špišić manor, then continue to the Church of St John the Baptist, administered by Franciscans from Virovitica since 1952. The short central route can also include the old school and cemetery chapel, both recorded in the municipality’s heritage inventory. Complete the outing with a drive toward the Bukovica vineyards, where the lowland fields associated with chamomile give way to Bilogora’s vines, orchards and wooded margins.
