About this place

Selnica is a Zagorje village within the municipality of Marija Bistrica, set where wooded hills descend toward the Krapina valley. Its defining visitor experience is Route 321 “Selnica”, a 10-kilometre cycling loop linking the village with the hamlets of Srebačići and Hanžeki and the local road toward Poznanovec. Although almost entirely paved, the circuit is not uniformly easy: a 1.2-kilometre climb toward Srebačići is followed by a sharp descent into the valley. The western edge of the route reaches Dubovec and the starting point by Lojzekova hiža, with the first 700 metres crossing neighbouring Gornja Stubica municipality. Selnica also lends its name to the Selnica–Gusakovec recreational ride, one of the activities associated with the summer programme in Marija Bistrica. The national Marian shrine, the Bistrica Calvary and the late-15th-century Black Madonna are found in nearby Marija Bistrica, making the village a practical rural base for combining cycling with the area’s pilgrimage heritage. Selnica therefore rewards travellers seeking a specific Zagorje route and small-settlement landscape rather than a conventional sightseeing centre.

Selnica belongs to the municipality centred on Marija Bistrica, yet its own character comes from the quieter western side of the Bistrica area. Route 321 reveals the settlement’s geography particularly well: it climbs from Selnica toward Srebačići, drops sharply into the Krapina valley, crosses the hamlet of Hanžeki and returns along the road from Poznanovec. At the edge of the loop, Dubovec provides the starting point by Lojzekova hiža, while 700 metres of the circuit briefly enter neighbouring Gornja Stubica. This sequence of hills, scattered hamlets and valley floor gives Selnica a distinctly Zagorje identity. The village’s link with the municipal centre also appears in the Selnica–Gusakovec recreational ride, included among Marija Bistrica’s summer activities.

Things to do

The clearest way to explore Selnica is to follow Route 321, a 10-kilometre loop whose mostly paved surface suits several types of bicycle. From the trailhead by Lojzekova hiža, ride the first 700 metres into Selnica, take the eastern branch and, after another 600 metres, begin the 1.2-kilometre climb toward Srebačići. A sharp descent leads to the gentler Krapina valley section through Hanžeki, while the final three kilometres along the Selnica–Poznanovec road complete the circuit. The ride can be paired with a visit to Marija Bistrica, where the national shrine, the Black Madonna and the Bistrica Calvary provide a cultural conclusion to an otherwise landscape-focused outing.
