Lobor
About this place
Lobor lies on the southern slopes of Ivanščica, about 50 kilometres north of Zagreb, in a Zagorje landscape shaped by shrines, ruined castles and unusually deep archaeological layers. Its foremost destination is the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain, set on a hillfort above the village and enclosed by a Baroque arcaded wall. The present Baroque-altered Gothic church stands over much earlier places of worship, while finds from the plateau trace occupation from the Bronze Age through Late Antiquity and the early medieval period. More than two decades of excavations uncovered the northernmost known example of early Croatian interlace sculpture, establishing Lobor as a major archaeological site in northern Croatia. The village itself contains the late-Baroque parish church of Saint Anne, while the surrounding slopes preserve Pusti Lobor, Oštrcgrad, Saint Peter’s chapel on Petrova Gora and Loborgrad Castle. Lobor was also the birthplace of writer Franjo Horvat Kiš in 1886. A compact visit can link the village centre with the ascent to Our Lady of the Mountain and views towards Ivanščica. For visitors without a car, a BO-NI PROMET local route connects Lobor and Zlatar via Buntaki, Vinipotok and Ladislavec.
Lobor is more than a Zagorje village beneath Ivanščica: prehistory, medieval power and pilgrimage tradition overlap on the same hill. The Our Lady of the Mountain hillfort was occupied in the Bronze Age, while the present church combines a Gothic core, Renaissance bell tower and Baroque enclosure. The surrounding landscape includes the 13th-century ruins of Pusti Lobor, Oštrcgrad on the Ivanščica slopes and the early-Baroque Loborgrad associated with the Keglević family. The central Saint Anne’s Square takes its name from the late-Baroque parish church. Lobor’s literary dimension comes from Franjo Horvat Kiš, a Croatian Modernist writer born here whose name is now carried by the local primary school.

Things to do
Begin on Saint Anne’s Square beside the late-Baroque parish church, then climb to the shrine of Our Lady of the Mountain on the hillfort above Lobor. Examine its polygonal sanctuary, Renaissance bell tower, Baroque enclosure and surviving fragments of Gothic frescoes depicting biblical scenes. Archaeological layers beneath the present church include early Christian, pre-Romanesque and Romanesque buildings, allowing one plateau to condense almost two millennia of sacred history. Continue to Saint Anthony’s chapel in Zazidje Park, built by the Keglević family in 1703. For a longer outing, choose the ruins of Oštrcgrad or Pusti Lobor, checking locally for current access and the condition of the forest paths before setting out.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Lobor has no railway station, so the final part of the journey is made by road from the direction of Zlatar. The county’s official timetable lists BO-NI PROMET route 278 between Lobor and Zlatar, covering nine kilometres and serving Buntaki, Vinipotok and Ladislavec. In 2026 the municipal website displays departures from Lobor at 07:50 and 11:45, though operating details should be checked immediately before travel. A car offers considerably more freedom for reaching Our Lady of the Mountain, Loborgrad, Petrova Gora and the castle ruins on Ivanščica’s slopes. The final approach to the hilltop shrine involves an ascent from central Lobor, so footwear should suit both the gradient and current weather.
