About
Lepoglava Penitentiary operates in part of a former Pauline monastic complex. After the Pauline order was abolished in 1786, the complex came under state administration; conversion into a men’s prison began in 1854, and the institution officially opened in 1855. Its most distinctive element is the prison building constructed between 1908 and 1914 in line with the Irish progressive system of sentence enforcement. The penitentiary is a closed institution for adult men and is not a museum open for independent visits. Its history can be understood from outside the complex, while the Pauline section was separated from the prison section in 2001.
