Križnica
About this place
Križnica is a Drava-side village in the Municipality of Pitomača, set on the river’s left bank beside the Croatian–Hungarian border. River and frontier make it feel like a “land island”: cars arriving from Pitomača cross by ferry, while walkers and cyclists can use the suspension bridge. The village lies within the Mura–Drava Regional Park and the transboundary Mura–Drava–Danube Biosphere Reserve, making birdwatching, riverside scenery and easy cycling central to a visit. The Križnica Visitor Centre interprets the biosphere reserve, while the Banov brod educational trail offers a manageable way into the Drava landscape. A new ferry was delivered through a project implemented between July 2022 and March 2023 and carries residents, visitors, vehicles and goods. Crossing conditions shape every outing here, so check the ferry before setting off: it does not run at night, during exceptionally low or high water, or when the Drava freezes.
Križnica’s identity comes from a broad Drava meander and the Hungarian border, which separate the village physically from the municipal centre of Pitomača. Its suspension bridge spans 164 metres—about 250 metres including the approaches—and remains the pedestrian and cycling link whenever the ferry is unable to operate. Arriving by car across the river is therefore part of local daily life, not merely a visitor experience. Floodplain woodland, backwaters and farmland form part of the wider protected Mura–Drava landscape. The Križnica Visitor Centre places this riverside setting within the story of the transboundary biosphere reserve, while local visitor infrastructure includes the Banov brod educational trail and waymarked cycling routes.

Things to do
Begin with the Drava crossing, choosing the cable ferry or suspension bridge; either immediately explains Križnica’s reputation as a landlocked island. Once across, visit the Križnica Visitor Centre, devoted to the Mura–Drava–Danube Biosphere Reserve, then continue along the Banov brod educational trail through the lowland river landscape. Cyclists can incorporate the bridge into a ride linking the Pitomača bank with marked routes around the village. For birdwatching and photography, seek out the quieter stretches beside the Drava while keeping to established tracks and respecting floodplain habitats. If returning by vehicle, build the day around the ferry and leave enough time for its final daytime crossing.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Vehicles approaching from Pitomača cross the Drava on the Križnica ferry, whereas the suspension bridge is for pedestrians and cyclists. The Visitor Centre’s published schedule lists hourly summer departures from the Križnica bank between 7:00 and 19:00; in winter, the final departure is at 16:00, with the return crossing from the Pitomača bank following unloading. Check the service immediately before travelling, since the ferry stops at night, during exceptionally high or low river levels, and when the Drava freezes. The bridge can still carry people and personal belongings in those conditions, but it is not a road crossing for cars.
