About this place

Košnica is a tiny Zagorje settlement in the municipality of Desinić, amid the hills of western Krapina-Zagorje County. Croatia’s 2021 census recorded 77 residents, 25 private households and 31 dwellings used as permanent homes in Košnica. The village belongs to a landscape of vineyards, orchards, fields, meadows and wooded northern slopes, a pattern also visible on cadastral maps of Košnica drawn in 1861. Its name is echoed by neighbouring settlements such as Gora Košnička, Hum Košnički, Ivanić Košnički and Stara Ves Košnička. Because homes and hamlets are dispersed across this hilly area, travelling by car is more practical than expecting a compact village centre. For a substantial cultural visit, head to nearby Veliki Tabor, the medieval castle at Hum Košnički, or to Desinić for the municipality’s basic services. Košnica therefore works better as a peaceful base for discovering western Zagorje than as a destination with extensive visitor facilities. It particularly suits travellers interested in scattered rural communities and the cultural landscape once shaped by the Veliki Tabor estate.

Košnica is one of 28 settlements in the municipality of Desinić and belongs to a cluster of villages whose names retain the Košnički designation. Croatia’s 2021 census lists 77 residents in Košnica, compared with 90 in Gora Košnička, 69 in Hum Košnički and 21 in Ivanić Košnički. Cadastral maps of Košnica from 1861 show woodland on northern slopes, meadows beside streams, and vineyards and small wine huts on divided plots. The village’s identity is consequently found in its hilly cultural landscape and its network of small communities around Veliki Tabor, rather than in a separate historic centre within Košnica itself.

Things to do

Use a walk or drive through Košnica to explore the neighbouring Košnički villages and their mosaic of vineyards, meadows, orchards and wooded slopes, a landscape already documented on maps from 1861. The principal cultural stop nearby should be Veliki Tabor Castle at Hum Košnički, one of the distinctive medieval castles of Hrvatsko Zagorje. Its story is tied to the Ratkaj family and the legend of Veronika of Desinić, giving historical context to the surrounding countryside. After visiting the museum, continue to Desinić, roughly three kilometres southeast of Veliki Tabor, where the municipality’s central services are located.

Practical information

Getting there and around

A car is the most practical way to reach Košnica because the village lies in a hilly municipality made up of 28 small, dispersed settlements. Krapina-Zagorje County’s public bus network includes a Presečki grupa service between Desinić and Hum na Sutli, but its published stop list does not confirm a call within Košnica itself. The Municipality of Desinić directs passengers to the Zagreb and Pregrada bus stations for departure information. Travellers without a car should therefore check the current timetable and arrange the final leg from Desinić or another confirmed stop rather than assuming that a bus serves the village directly.
