Poljana Sutlanska
About this place
Poljana Sutlanska is a small village in the Municipality of Zagorska Sela, north of the municipal centre and close to the Sutla River and the Croatian–Slovenian border. Its clearest landmark is the hilltop parish church of St Anne. Documentary sources first mention it as a chapel in the 17th century; it was enlarged in the mid-18th century and became the parish church when the parish was founded in 1789. A Baroque-capped bell tower commands the approach, while the main altar, installed in 1909, is the work of Maribor craftsman Alojz Zoratti. A Way of the Cross climbs toward the church, with Passion reliefs made by M. Juranić in 1978, beginning near a stone column bearing the Virgin and Child. The nearby rectory dates from the 1820s, though later alterations followed. With 96 residents recorded in the 2021 census, this is best understood as a quiet borderland village for a short encounter with Zagorje’s sacred heritage and hilly countryside, rather than a fully serviced tourist resort.
Poljana Sutlanska is organised visually around a hilltop church complex rather than a square or main street. St Anne’s has a rectangular nave, a sanctuary ending in a shallow semicircular apse, a northern chapel, sacristy and oratory, plus a wooden choir gallery. Its 1909 high altar places St Anne and the young Virgin Mary in the central niche, with the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary to either side; Alojz Zoratti also made the side altar of St Florian. The 1978 Way of the Cross turns the ascent toward the church into the village’s defining walking line. Its proximity to the Sutla places Poljana firmly within the Croatian–Slovenian border landscape of Zagorska Sela.

Things to do
Start beside the stone column topped by the Virgin and Child, made in the late 19th or early 20th century. From there, follow the 1978 Stations of the Cross uphill to St Anne’s Church. Examine the Baroque-capped bell tower outside; if the church is open, look for Zoratti’s 1909 high altar and his side altar dedicated to St Florian. The rectory southwest of the church was originally built in the 1820s. A brief village walk can then be extended to viewpoints over the Sutla border country, though visitors should not expect a formally waymarked tourist circuit within Poljana Sutlanska itself.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Poljana Sutlanska is reached by road, using the D229 state road through Zagorska Sela municipality. Local road LC22004 forms a 2.6-kilometre link from the D229 at Luka Poljanska, through Poljana Sutlanska and back to the D229. This small road loop makes it possible to approach from Miljana and leave toward Luka Poljanska without retracing the same lane. A car, motorcycle or bicycle is the practical choice for reaching St Anne’s Church on the hill: the published Savski Marof–Kumrovec railway route serves Zagorska Sela station rather than Poljana Sutlanska itself. Cyclists should allow for the climb from the Sutla valley to the church precinct.
