About this place

Desinić is a Zagorje village whose central square, parish church of St George and surrounding hills are overshadowed by Veliki Tabor, the fortified noble residence at Hum Košnički. Church records mention Desinić around 1334 as the seat of St George’s parish, while the present church was blessed in 1902 and preserves the epitaph of Petar II Ratkay. Veliki Tabor appears explicitly in a document from 1513. Its oldest core is a pentagonal tower, enclosed during the 16th and 17th centuries by the residential and defensive ring seen today. The Ratkay family left its well-and-bucket coat of arms above the entrance, while local tradition bound the castle to Veronika of Desinić and Fridrik of Celje. The museum rooms, inner courtyard and views across western Zagorje now provide the main reason to visit. A meal at Grešna gorica adds a particularly local finale, with the restaurant’s vineyard setting facing Veliki Tabor’s walls.

Desinić’s identity is marked by two vertical landmarks: the tower of St George’s parish church on the village square and the towers of Veliki Tabor above the surrounding valleys. The settlement lies in western Hrvatsko Zagorje, with its documented ecclesiastical history reaching back to about 1334 and the record “Ecclesia sancti Gheorgii de Zothla.” Veliki Tabor stands outside the centre at Hum Košnički, yet the castle defines the area’s cultural profile. The Ratkay family linked it with estates such as Miljana and Velika Horvatska, turning the countryside around Desinić into a historical landscape of noble residences, churches, vineyards and steep Zagorje hills.

Things to see

Veliki Tabor preserves the Desinić area’s most striking architecture: a central pentagonal tower dating from the 15th century and an outer ring added through the 16th and 17th centuries. The complex retains its well, chapel and bell, while the museum interprets the castle’s owners and the legend of Veronika of Desinić. In the village centre, St George’s Church has a polygonal sanctuary, side chapels forming a cross-shaped plan and a façade relief of the Sacred Heart flanked by angels. The present church was blessed in 1902, while older treasures include silver chalices and the epitaph of Petar II Ratkay.

Things to do

Start on Desinić’s square with St George’s Church, noting its pointed tower, J. Brand organ and the epitaph of Petar II Ratkay. Continue by road to Hum Košnički and devote the main part of the day to Veliki Tabor’s museum rooms, courtyard, chapel and well. Look for the Ratkay coat of arms with its bucket motif above the entrance, then compare the castle’s defensive position with the view back towards Desinić. Finish at Grešna gorica, where Veliki Tabor can be seen from a setting of vineyards, meadows and old oak woodland.

Food and drink

Klet Grešna gorica, at Taborgradska 35 in Desinić, looks towards Veliki Tabor Castle and makes a fitting stop after visiting the museum-fortress. This rural household restaurant is furnished with old objects and natural materials, with 85 indoor seats in the central cellar-style dining room and 180 outdoors, including 80 covered places. The Croatian National Tourist Board includes it in its Okusi Zagorja programme, highlighting its Zagorje setting and the view of restored Veliki Tabor. The experience is shaped as much by the hillside setting and direct sightline to Desinić’s landmark as by the meal itself.

Practical information

Practical information

Desinić Municipality is based at 7 Trg sv. Jurja, while visitor information for the area is coordinated by the Kumrovec, Desinić and Zagorska Sela tourism board. Veliki Tabor is a separate museum site at Hum Košnički, so its official website should be checked for current opening hours and programmes before travelling. St George’s Church stands directly on Desinić’s main square but does not operate as a museum with fixed visitor hours. A table at Grešna gorica is worth arranging in advance, particularly at weekends or for groups combining lunch with a tour of the castle.

Getting there and around

Presečki Grupa operates bus links between Desinić and Zabok, with county route 595 passing through Pregrada, Tuhelj and other Zagorje settlements. The operator’s 2026 records also show Desinić–Zabok–Zagreb services, although departures vary by date and school-term regime. Veliki Tabor is not in central Desinić but at Hum Košnički, so arriving at the village bus stop does not cover the final section to the castle. A car, taxi or pre-arranged local transfer is therefore more practical for combining St George’s Square, Veliki Tabor and Grešna gorica in one visit.
