Gornji Mihaljevec
About this place
Gornji Mihaljevec occupies the hilly western corner of Međimurje, about 15 kilometres west of Čakovec and close to the Slovenian border. It is the administrative centre of a municipality comprising twelve villages, surrounded by vineyards, orchards, woodland and narrow country roads characteristic of Upper Međimurje. The protected Church of St Catherine anchors the village centre. Built in the late 17th century, it gained its stone bell tower in 1756. Another distinctive heritage feature is the wayside shrine depicting the Suffering Christ, locally called Božja misel, at the junction towards Dragoslavec Breg and Dragoslavec Selo. For outdoor exercise, the Mladost Sports and Recreation Park includes a fitness trail through the greenery. Rather than offering a dense sequence of museums, Gornji Mihaljevec works best as a base for walking and cycling across the Međimurje hills. As local public transport may be limited, a car or bicycle is the practical choice for linking the church, park, shrine and neighbouring villages.
Gornji Mihaljevec lies at the western edge of Međimurje County, where low hills roll towards the Slovenian border. The municipality shares just over five kilometres of frontier with Slovenia, while the village serves as the administrative link for eleven other settlements. Vineyards, orchards and woodland create a landscape noticeably different from the flatter Lower Međimurje. The village’s principal heritage landmark is the single-nave Church of St Catherine, built in the late 17th century and given a stone bell tower in 1756. It is protected under registration number Z-1115. The wayside shrine of the Suffering Christ, another protected cultural property, preserves a distinctive local devotional tradition at the junction towards Dragoslavec Breg and Dragoslavec Selo. Mladost Park, with its recreation facilities and fitness trail, adds a contemporary outdoor focus.

Things to do
Start a short tour in central Gornji Mihaljevec at the Church of St Catherine, where its single nave, narrower polygonal sanctuary and stone bell tower from 1756 define the silhouette. Continue to the shrine of the Suffering Christ at the crossroads for Gornji Mihaljevec, Dragoslavec Breg and Dragoslavec Selo. Its local names, including Božja misel and the Croatian Jesus, reveal how deeply it belongs to the area’s devotional tradition. Reserve the active part of the visit for Mladost Park and its fitness trail. A bicycle ride can then continue through the woodland, vineyards and orchards of western Međimurje, with care required on local roads. For a wider circuit through the municipality, regional visitor material also highlights the Veliko kamenje archaeological site near Preseka and the City of Labyrinths in Badličan.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Gornji Mihaljevec is approximately 15 kilometres west of Čakovec in a hilly, road-dependent part of Međimurje near the Slovenian border. From Čakovec, local roads lead towards the village through the Nedelišće and Macinec area, while a car makes it easier to continue to Dragoslavec Breg, Preseka and the municipality’s other settlements. The Church of St Catherine, Mladost Park and the shrine of the Suffering Christ can be combined through short drives and walks. Cycling suits both the terrain and the tourism strategy of the Heart of Međimurje area, which places particular emphasis on cycle tourism, although riders should expect climbs on the local hills. As the available visitor sources do not provide a dependable year-round timetable for the village itself, travel by public transport should be coordinated in advance with current local departures from Čakovec.
