Lopatinec
About this place
Lopatinec is the seat of Sveti Juraj na Bregu municipality in Međimurje’s hilly wine country north of Čakovec, although the municipal offices themselves stand at a neighbouring Pleškovec address. The settlement is dominated by the parish church of Saint George, raised on a prominent hilltop in the second half of the 18th century. This hall church has a narrower rectangular sanctuary, an articulated façade and an arcaded enclosure punctuated by slender cylindrical towers. Part of its bell tower collapsed onto the sanctuary in 2008; reconstruction of both church and tower was completed in 2011. The church and rectory are protected together as registered cultural property Z-1117, and the church remains a visual landmark across much of Međimurje. Lopatinec’s spatial plan places it on the DC227 Čakovec–Štrigova road and identifies the Gospočjak recreational fishing pond. Country lanes also lead towards Brezje, Mali Mihaljevec and Zasadbreg, following the same village sequence used for the parish Way of the Cross on 14 March 2026. Lopatinec consequently makes a focused base for exploring the Jurovski hills, sacred architecture and northern Međimurje’s vineyard landscape.
Lopatinec is the administrative seat of Sveti Juraj na Bregu, one of nine settlements in the Jurovski hill country, though the municipal offices are physically located in Pleškovec. The village stands on the Čakovec–Štrigova road among Međimurje’s vineyards and low hills. Its skyline is defined by the late-18th-century Church of Saint George, distinguished by an arcaded enclosure and cylindrical towers. Part of the bell tower fell onto the sanctuary in 2008, and reconstruction was completed in 2011. Listed together as cultural property Z-1117, the church and rectory form the architectural and symbolic centre of Lopatinec.

Things to do
The climb to Saint George’s Church is the natural start to a Lopatinec visit because its prominent site reveals the contours of the Jurovski hills. Walk around the arcaded enclosure, slender round towers and rebuilt bell tower, reconstructed after the 2008 collapse. Continue along local lanes towards Brezje and Mali Mihaljevec; the parish Way of the Cross in 2026 carried on through Zasadbreg before returning to the church. Lopatinec’s spatial plan also designates Gospočjak as a recreational pond for angling and leisure. Vineyard slopes and recurring views back towards the hilltop church complete a compact walk or bicycle circuit.

Practical information
Getting there and around
The main road into Lopatinec is the DC227, which links Šenkovec, Lopatinec and Prekopa before continuing towards the Banfi border crossing. Travellers approaching from Gornji Mihaljevec can use county road ŽC2254 through Dragoslavec Selo, Okrugli Vrh and Vučetinec, where it meets the DC227. Lopatinec has no railway station, so rail passengers need to transfer to road transport in Čakovec. Under HŽPP’s 2025/2026 timetable, Čakovec has regional train connections with Varaždin and Koprivnica; the final leg to Lopatinec is therefore best arranged by car, taxi or a pre-booked local transfer.
