About this place

Gornja Jelenska is a Moslavina village on the slopes of Moslavačka gora, eight kilometres north-east of Popovača and about 160 metres above sea level. The Jelenska stream, locally called Jelenka, runs through its valley, while wooded hills and forest tracks shape the settlement’s rural character. Its central landmark is the late-Baroque parish church of St John the Baptist, built in 1789 and protected as cultural heritage. An unusual chapter lies beneath the village: a former bentonite-clay mine yielded deinothere remains in 1994 and a gomphothere fossil in 1996, both dating back roughly 17 million years. Above the valley stand the ruins of medieval Jelengrad, approached by a forest cut or a marked hiking route. Gornja Jelenska is therefore not a collection of commercial attractions but a base for connecting a historic church, a remarkable fossil story and the forests of Moslavačka gora. Road access through Popovača is the practical choice, while Jelengrad requires footwear suited to steep woodland ground.

Gornja Jelenska lies in Moslavina, eight kilometres north-east of Popovača, on the slopes of Moslavačka gora at around 160 metres above sea level. The Jelenska stream—known locally as Jelenka—forms the axis of the village, with homes and farmland following the valley. Written records mention the settlement in 1711, while its parish was established in 1789. That same year is associated with the late-Baroque church of St John the Baptist, the village’s clearest historic landmark. Gornja Jelenska’s identity also reaches deep underground through its former bentonite-clay mine, where fossils of large Miocene mammals were uncovered during the 1990s.

Things to do

Begin in Gornja Jelenska at the 1789 church of St John the Baptist, a protected cultural property linking the village centre with its parish history. From there, continue into the woods above the Jelenska stream valley and seek the approach to Jelengrad’s ruins. The Moslavačka gora management plan places the fortress on a rise of about 300 metres, to the right of the stream and close to the village; access is by a steep forest cut from the east or a hiking trail from the north. The former mine adds a palaeontological dimension, having produced remains of a deinothere, a gomphothere and a Miocene rhinoceros.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Gornja Jelenska is eight kilometres north-east of Popovača, making the road through Popovača the most direct approach to the village and the slopes of Moslavačka gora. Within the settlement, movement follows the Jelenska valley, and a pedestrian path completed as far as Rudnička Street made the busiest part of the village safer for walkers. Ordinary road navigation is not enough for the final approach to Jelengrad: the ruins are reached by a steep forest cut from the east or a hiking trail from the north. Because the final terrain is wooded and unpaved, treat the fortress visit as a separate walk from the drive into Gornja Jelenska, particularly after rain.
