Popovača
About this place
Popovača sits at the heart of Moslavina, between the vineyard slopes of Moslavačka Gora and the wetlands of Lonjsko Polje. The town and its twelve surrounding settlements are closely associated with Škrlet, a local grape best explored at wineries around Voloder, Potok and the hills above Popovača. Its position beside the Zagreb–Lipovac motorway and the Zagreb–Vinkovci railway makes it a convenient base between Kutina and Ivanić-Grad. From the centre, visitors can head south through Osekovo towards the floodplain habitats of Lonjsko Polje or north into the forests, medieval ruins and cycling routes of Moslavačka Gora. Popovača’s character lies less in a single monumental old town than in the meeting of vineyards, villages, lowland fields and wooded hills. The tourist office stands on Trg grofova Erdődyja, while wineries such as Trdenić, Miklaužić, Florijanović and Prpić introduce the area’s wine culture. It is a rewarding stop for travellers wishing to combine Škrlet, Moslavina views and the edge of one of Croatia’s major wetlands in a single day.
Popovača belongs to Moslavina, a historic region where the wooded Moslavačka Gora hills descend towards the Lonjsko Polje floodplain. That transition defines the area: vineyards and forests rise north of town, while the road through Osekovo leads into a flat landscape of wet meadows and drainage channels. Škrlet is Moslavina’s signature grape, and the wine route between Popovača and Kutina links cellars, family farms and rural retreats. The municipal area comprises Popovača and twelve neighbouring settlements, with Voloder maintaining an especially strong wine-growing identity. Unlike a destination centred on one compact historic quarter, Popovača is best understood by travelling between several contrasting pieces of the Moslavina landscape.
Things to see
The main attractions around Popovača lie beyond its compact centre. Moslavačka Gora offers forest roads and traces of medieval strongholds, while the landscape of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park begins south of town. Osekovo provides a tangible approach to the wetland: park documentation identifies locations near the entrances to Gornje and Donje Selo and beside the Voloderac channel. Vineyards and cellars towards Voloder, Potok and Kutina form another attraction focused on Škrlet and other Moslavina varieties. A visit therefore connects three distinct settings rather than revolving around one landmark: vine-covered slopes, a wooded hill range and the Sava floodplain.

Things to do
Begin in central Popovača, where the tourist office on Trg grofova Erdődyja can point visitors towards current local attractions and producers. Continue into the vineyards above town for a tasting of Škrlet along the Moslavina wine route; published local addresses include Trdenić in Trnovka and Florijanović in Potok. Reserve the second half of the day for Osekovo, a gateway to the Popovača side of Lonjsko Polje, where the low floodplain presents a striking contrast to the wine hills. More active visitors can sample Moslavina’s wider network of over 300 kilometres of themed cycling routes, including wine, petroleum-history and medieval itineraries.
Food and drink
Eating around Popovača is closely tied to Škrlet and Moslavina’s wine cellars. The regional tourist board lists Restaurant August in Trnovka together with the Trdenić, Miklaužić and August Aqua et ignis wineries in the Popovača area. OPG Florijanović operates in Potok, while Prpić winery is located in nearby Voloder. Producers along the Moslavina wine route often combine tastings with home-style food and rural hospitality, so arranging a meal or cellar visit in advance is sensible. Škrlet is the most distinctive local choice, while the wider Moslavina wine tradition also includes Moslavac and Dišeća Ranina.

Practical information
Getting there and around
Popovača has its own interchange on the A3 Bregana–Zagreb–Lipovac motorway, positioned between the Križ and Kutina junctions, so drivers arriving from Zagreb or eastern Slavonia can exit directly for the town. The railway station is at Kolodvorska 86 and forms part of the HŽ Passenger Transport network. For travel between 13 April and 12 December 2026, check the timetable for the exact date: some trains do not operate daily, and HŽPP marks operating days and any rail-replacement buses in its tables. A car remains the more practical option for reaching the wine-growing settlements of Voloder and Potok or nearby Osekovo from central Popovača.
