About this place

Cestica sits at Croatia’s far north-western edge, where the Varaždin plain beside the Drava meets vineyard-covered hills approaching Slovenia. Its name is associated with the old Ptuj–Osijek Roman road, while early maps place the ancient settlement of Ramista near the route’s entry into present-day Croatia. The local landscape is defined by the Drava, Lake Ormož and two road links into Slovenia, at Dubrava Križovljanska and Otok Virje. The area’s outstanding heritage landmark is Križovljan-grad, a Baroque country house developed around an older fortified core and remodelled by the Bakić family after 1752. The mansion and its park are protected as cultural property under registration number Z-853. Nearby Babinec preserves another small historical clue: a 1658 stone column depicting the suffering Christ bears the old place-name Babnik. Cestica therefore works less as a conventional sightseeing town and more as a base for exploring the Drava lowlands, historic transport corridors and settlements strung along the Croatian–Slovenian border.

Cestica occupies a landscape that shifts from the Drava floodplain and cultivated fields to hills patterned with vineyards, woodland and stream valleys. The municipality follows the Slovenian border opposite Zavrč, Gorišnica and Ormož, while Cestica village itself grew beside the D2 state road. The frontier is central to local identity: a former Drava ferry gave Dubrava Križovljanska its earlier name, Brod, before the site became an important road connection. Close to the river, Križovljan-grad adds an aristocratic layer to this transport landscape. Its older square core and two Baroque wings stand apart from the predominantly roadside village fabric found across the Cestica area.

Things to do

Begin at Križovljan-grad and study its square fortified core and two unequal Baroque wings from the exterior; the mansion and surrounding park are jointly listed as protected cultural property. Continue to Dubrava Križovljanska, where the road towards Zavrč follows the historic approach from Styria into Croatian Podravina. For the natural part of the outing, turn towards the Drava and Lake Ormož, whose backwaters and riverside woodland are singled out in municipal planning as a particularly valuable landscape. Finish in Babinec at the 1658 column of the suffering Christ, a modest monument inscribed with the old village name Babnik. This sequence links Cestica’s mansion, frontier, river and small-scale religious heritage.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Cestica lies directly on the D2, the state road running from Dubrava Križovljanska through Varaždin, Koprivnica, Virovitica, Osijek and Vukovar towards Ilok. From Varaždin, the simplest approach follows the D2 towards Slovenia; within Cestica, county road ŽC2035 branches towards Vinica Breg. Local road LC25005 connects central Cestica with Otok Virje, while LC25006 leads towards Radovec and Križovljan Radovečki. Road links into Slovenia run through Dubrava Križovljanska to Zavrč and through Otok Virje to Ormož. Because the municipality’s villages, mansion, riverside sites and hills are dispersed, a car or bicycle offers a far more complete visit than staying beside the main road alone.
