Vindija Cave

cave and archaeological site in Croatia

About

Vindija Cave lies two kilometres west of Donja Voća, on Križnjakov vrh in the eastern part of Ravna gora. It has been protected as a palaeontological natural monument since 1964. Its main chamber is about 50 metres long, up to 28 metres wide and more than 20 metres high, while the entrance profile preserves a rare sequence of Pleistocene sediments. Human and animal fossils, together with thousands of stone and bone artefacts, have been found here. Vindija’s Neanderthal remains are also important to genomic research: a high-coverage genome was sequenced from a female who lived roughly 50,000 years ago. The sensitive site entered a programme of entrance protection and interior works in 2026.
