About this place

Čađavica lies at 105 metres above sea level in the flat Drava plain, on the road between Slatina and Donji Miholjac. Medieval records name it Zagocha from the 14th century, while the parish church of St Peter the Apostle now defines its skyline. The church combines a Gothic core with later Baroque alterations, and its tower dates from 1778; restoration work in 2026 uncovered remains of an earlier medieval Gothic church and an adjoining burial ground. Čađavica is also associated with a 6th–7th-century silver hoard attributed to the Martinovka culture and counted among Croatia’s earliest material traces of Slavic culture. The nearby Drava leads visitors towards Noskovci, home to the Dravska priča Visitor Centre and the Drava Life educational trail, both focused on the river ecosystem. Although Čađavica became the first station on the Croatian side of a cross-border railway from Hungary in 1894, present-day access relies chiefly on the roads crossing the Podravina region.

Čađavica is a Podravina settlement between Slatina and Donji Miholjac, surrounded by farmland and the river landscapes of the Drava. Its historical name Zagocha appears in sources from the 14th century, while the modern centre gathers around the Church of St Peter the Apostle. The church tower dates from 1778, and work in 2026 revealed foundations of an earlier Gothic building. The local silver hoard adds exceptional archaeological depth: earrings, a necklace, bracelets and belt fittings from the 6th and 7th centuries are linked to the Martinovka culture and Croatia’s earliest Slavic material heritage.

Things to do

In central Čađavica, visit the Church of St Peter the Apostle, whose 1778 tower rises prominently above the low Drava plain. Work beside the church in 2026 uncovered remains of a medieval Gothic structure and an old burial ground, joining an active parish with archaeological layers. Continue to Noskovci within Čađavica municipality, where the Dravska priča Visitor Centre interprets the natural heritage of the Mura–Drava Regional Park. Its Drava Life educational trail introduces the river’s side channels, floodplain woodland and species shaped by the Drava’s changing course.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Čađavica stands on the Podravina road corridor between Slatina and Donji Miholjac, reached via the D34 and local connections to Noskovci, Starin and Zvonimirovac. A car or bicycle is the practical choice for combining Čađavica with the Dravska priča centre in Noskovci and the nearby Drava landscape. Rail history no longer defines arrival: in 1894 Čađavica was the first station on the Croatian side of a line from Hungary’s Szentlőrinc, crossing the Drava and continuing through Noskovci and Slatina towards Našice. That episode explains the village’s former transport role, but a modern visit should be planned by road.
