About this place

Bedekovčina is a Zagorje settlement about 40 km from Zagreb and 14 km from Marija Bistrica, shaped by aristocratic heritage, ceramics and lakes created by industry. Its name is linked to the Bedeković Komorski family, to whom King Béla IV granted Kumur in 1267. Their legacy remains visible in Gornja and Donja Bedekovčina: Bedeković-Vranyczany Castle in Gornja Bedekovčina is a notable single-wing Baroque residence, accompanied by a park and orangery. Municipal history also records the Bedeković manor in Donja Bedekovčina and Sermage Castle in Poznanovec, both dating from the 18th century. Bedekovčina Lakes reveal the area’s other defining story: they filled with water after clay extraction between 1937 and 1950. Today they support recreational activity, while the manufacture of roof tiles, decorative ceramics and refractory products reflects the settlement’s industrial past. Bedekovčina makes a distinctive Zagorje stop where noble estates and former clay pits share the same landscape.

Bedekovčina’s character rests on the Bedeković Komorski family, whose name is linked to a royal grant of 1267, and on the ceramics industry that developed here. In Gornja Bedekovčina, Bedeković-Vranyczany Castle stands on a hill within a landscaped 19th-century park. The Ministry of Culture identifies it as a valuable, preserved single-wing Baroque castle, although later adaptation altered parts of its interior. The low-lying part of the settlement is defined by Bedekovčina Lakes, formed when clay extraction for bricks and tiles between 1937 and 1950 encountered springs. That contrast between a hilltop estate and water-filled former clay pits gives Bedekovčina a landscape unlike the nearby Zagorje villages.

Things to do

Begin at Bedekovčina Lakes, where water filled clay workings created between 1937 and 1950. The lakes are a centre for recreation and sport, with the local angling association Jezera reflecting their fishing tradition. Continue to Gornja Bedekovčina for Bedeković-Vranyczany Castle, its park and its Neoclassical orangery. The Encyclopedia of Hrvatsko zagorje identifies the orangery as the only structure of its kind in the region. Finish by viewing the Bedeković manor in Donja Bedekovčina, or continue to Poznanovec for Sermage Castle. This route links the industrial origins of the Bajeri lakes with the municipality’s three aristocratic residences.

Practical information

Getting there and around

Bedekovčina is reached from Zagreb by rail via Zabok on the line towards Varaždin; HŽ’s 2026 timetable lists Bedekovčina as a stop on that route. The station is at Trg Ante Starčevića 12 in the settlement centre. Check HŽ’s journey planner before travelling, since departure times change with timetable periods. Bedekovčina lies about 40 km from Zagreb and 14 km from Marija Bistrica, making it a practical point from which to continue by car to the Marian shrine. The lakes and Gornja Bedekovčina Castle are not at the same point as the station, so allow for walking beyond the centre or arrange your own transport to cover all sites.
