About
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands on Trg hrvatske kraljice Jelene in the centre of Sveti Križ Začretje. It was recorded in the 1334 list of parishes of the Diocese of Zagreb and may already have existed by the late 12th century. Centuries of alterations have largely obscured its original Gothic character. Its present form mainly dates from the mid-17th century, while side chapels, a sacristy, choir and new bell tower were added in the mid-18th century. Zagreb Bishop Josip Galjuf consecrated the church on 14 June 1779.
