Vrbovsko occupies the eastern edge of Gorski kotar, roughly halfway between Zagreb and Rijeka, and its unusually large municipal area contains 65 settlements. Its natural emblem is Kamačnik, a 3.2-kilometre tributary of the Dobra whose spring, canyon and surrounding 83.53 hectares have been protected as a significant landscape since 2002. A riverside trail crosses timber galleries and footbridges past rapids, potholes and small cascades, while the musical Pan Trail places five playable instruments in the forest. Culture is spread beyond central Vrbovsko: Lukovdol preserves poet Ivan Goran Kovačić’s birthplace, Gomirje has a monastery dating back to 1600, and Severin na Kupi has its Frankopan castle. The railway station stands close to the Kamačnik entrance, making this a rare Gorski kotar walk that works well by train. Local menus feature game stew, trout, škripavac cheese, baked potato halves and povitica, with Bistro Kamačnik positioned directly at the stream’s mouth. Vrbovsko therefore works as a dispersed destination: nature is immediately accessible from town, while heritage sites are reached on short drives towards the Kupa valley and Gomirje.
Vrbovsko is the easternmost town of Gorski kotar, administering 65 settlements across 280 square kilometres. The Kupa and the Slovenian border shape its northern edge, while the southern boundary climbs towards peaks above 1,200 metres, including Bijela kosa and Mirkovica. The Zagreb–Rijeka railway, historic Lujzijana road and A6 motorway give it the character of a transport town between two major cities. Rather than being confined to one centre, Vrbovsko is discovered through Kamačnik, Lukovdol, Gomirje, Moravice and Severin na Kupi, each representing a different strand of mountain nature, literature, railway history or Frankopan heritage.

Protected since 2002, Kamačnik covers 83.53 hectares and follows 3.2 kilometres of water from a vauclusian spring to the Dobra. In Lukovdol, Ivan Goran Kovačić’s birthplace is now a memorial museum with a library, gallery and permanent exhibition devoted to the poet; an amphitheatre and Vojin Bakić’s monument stand nearby. Gomirje Monastery traces its foundation to 1600, while construction of its Church of St John the Baptist began in 1719. Severin na Kupi’s Zrinski-Frankopan castle recalls the aristocratic history of the Kupa valley, and Herman Bollé designed Vrbovsko’s neo-Gothic Church of St John of Nepomuk, built in 1893.
Start a day in Vrbovsko at the point where the Kamačnik meets the Dobra, the entrance to this protected landscape. The trail follows the gorge across wooden bridges and galleries, with its final approach to the karst spring widened and improved in 2024. On the way back, pause for Pan’s Trail, an acoustic experience trail with instruments set in the canyon. The outing also works well by train: the railway stop is about 100 metres from the gorge. Finish at the Kamačnik hospitality venue at the confluence before returning to central Vrbovsko.
Vrbovsko’s mountain cooking centres on game, trout, potatoes, sauerkraut and dairy products. Look for game stew with hunter’s dumplings or polenta, trout coated in cornmeal, škripavac cheese and baked potato halves topped with bacon. Povitica filled with walnuts or apples and blueberry strudel are characteristic desserts, while Easter brings goranski nadjev, a savoury mixture of eggs, bread, ham, bacon and spring onions. Bistro Kamačnik is the convenient choice after the canyon walk. The official destination listings also include Restoran Rim at Severin na Kupi, Mali raj Zdihovo and Mirni kut.
Visitor information is currently provided through the Town of Vrbovsko at Ulica hrvatskih branitelja 1, as the former tourist office at Ivana Gorana Kovačića 44 is no longer operating. Komunalac Vrbovsko at Željeznička 1A manages visitor access to Kamačnik, and trail conditions are worth checking after heavy rain, snow or maintenance. The published schedule for the Lukovdol memorial museum lists Mondays and public holidays as closing days, with varying hours on other days. Vrbovsko, Lukovdol, Gomirje and Severin na Kupi do not form a single walkable cluster, so a car or arranged local transport is required to cover them all.
Vrbovsko is served by the A6 motorway between Zagreb and Rijeka, the historic Lujzijana road and the railway connecting the two cities. The station at Željeznička 5 is particularly convenient for Kamačnik, reached by a short signed road from the railway towards the stream mouth and Bistro Kamačnik. A car is far more practical for Lukovdol, Gomirje and Severin na Kupi because their sights are dispersed across the town’s 280-square-kilometre territory. Restoran Rim in Severin is about four kilometres from the Bosiljevo interchange and eight kilometres from the Vrbovsko interchange, making it an easy motorway stop.
