Malinska
About this place
Malinska developed in a wooded bay on the western side of Krk, sheltered from stronger winds and facing the Kvarner Gulf. Tourism began expanding around the turn of the 20th century, encouraged by steamship and railway connections, while today’s resort unfolds along a chain of beaches joined by coastal promenades. Rupa, the closest beach to the centre, holds Blue Flag status; Maestral has a pebbled entrance and accessible ramp, and Malin offers water sports and an illuminated volleyball court. North of Haludovo, the Paradise Path leads towards Njivice, while the waterfront route west continues through Rova and Vantačići to Porat. Porat contains the Franciscan Third Order monastery, and the parish church of St Apollinaris stands in Bogovići. The early Christian site of Cickini dates from the fifth to seventh centuries, while the modern DUBoak centre interprets local shipbuilding, navigation and islanders’ relationship with the sea. Road links reach Rijeka across the Krk Bridge, with buses continuing through Njivice and Omišalj.
Malinska is the coastal centre of Dubašnica, a group of villages on Krk’s wooded western side. Its sheltered bay softens strong winds and supports dense vegetation, making laurels, pines and stone pines characteristic of the shoreline around Haludovo. Tourism began developing around the turn of the 20th century, assisted by steamship and railway transport. Malinska’s present identity brings together bathing areas, the former Haludovo hotel complex, small harbours and the villages of Dubašnica. A waterfront promenade links the centre with Rova, Vantačići and Porat, while the Paradise Path heads in the opposite direction towards Njivice.

Porat contains the Franciscan Third Order monastery, one of the Malinska area’s principal religious landmarks. The parish church of St Apollinaris stands in Bogovići, while the old St Apollinaris cemetery preserves the location of the original church in the middle of Dubašnica Field. Cickini is an early Christian archaeological site dated to the fifth through seventh centuries. More recent heritage includes Fumak, a 6.60-metre votive cross raised in gratitude for recovery after a workplace accident.
Beaches
Rupa is the closest beach to central Malinska: roughly 350 metres long, it combines concrete terraces with pebbled entries and provides Blue Flag water, a children’s playground and accessible facilities. Maestral extends for about 200 metres, lies approximately 50 metres from parking and also has an accessibility ramp. The 500-metre Malin Beach adds volleyball, a floating park and water sports to swimming. Quieter Vrtača offers pine shade, while Vantačić is protected by its harbour. Porat has the pebbled Uhlić Beach, and north of the centre Ribarsko Selo retains the stone waterfront of the former Haludovo resort.

Things to do
Start the morning with a swim at Rupa, about 200 metres from central Malinska, then follow the promenade past Draga and Rova towards Vantačići. For a longer walk, take the Paradise Path from Haludovo towards Njivice; Malinska’s marked walking and running network totals roughly 50 kilometres. Spend the afternoon at DUBoak, where maritime heritage explains local navigation and boatbuilding. Continue by car or tourist road train to Porat to visit the Franciscan Third Order monastery. Return to Rupa at the end of the day, when its west-facing waterfront offers one of Malinska’s most open sunset views.
Food and drink
Malinska’s dining scene is spread between the centre, waterfront promenade and Dubašnica villages, with the official visitor guide listing restaurants, taverns, bistros and pizzerias. For a meal rooted in the Kvarner, look for local fish, shellfish and squid prepared with Krk olive oil, while island wines pair naturally with oily fish or lamb. Choices are not confined to the harbour: places to eat also sit beside Malin, Vrtača and Vantačić beaches and in Porat. As individual kitchens change their opening patterns with the season, the Malinska-Dubašnica Tourist Board guide is the practical source for current listings and contact details.
Practical information
Practical information
The Malinska-Dubašnica Tourist Board is at Markat 1, 51511 Malinska, and publishes beach maps, service contacts and route suggestions. Its Guide for You application includes local weather, dining, accommodation, excursions and event information. Accessibility varies along the coast: Rupa, Maestral and Vrtača provide adapted entry, whereas the more natural coves beyond Porat call for sturdier footwear. The Paradise Path and trails towards Glavotok are more comfortable outside the hottest hours. For longer trips around Krk, visitors can rely on the island’s road connection across the Krk Bridge rather than planning around a ferry.
Parking
Malinska operates two principal paid-parking zones. Under the municipal tariff published for 2024, zone 1 cost €1.30 per hour or €9 for a day, while zone 2 cost €1 per hour or €6 per day. The separate Ježevo zone charged €3 per hour and included daily rates intended for buses and camper vans. Walking distance from parking varies by beach: Maestral and Malin are about 50 metres away, Rupa sits beside a parking area, and Vrtača is roughly 300 metres from the nearest one. Visitors should use the currently valid municipal tariff for their travel season.
Getting there and around
Malinska is linked to the mainland by road across the Krk Bridge, so arriving by car does not require a ferry. The bus connection towards Rijeka follows the Krk–Malinska–Njivice–Omišalj–Rijeka corridor, with the municipality publishing timetable information online. Within the resort, a tourist road train connects Malinska with Rova Beach and continues towards Uhlić in Porat, a useful option for families and anyone avoiding a long walk in summer heat. The waterfront promenade also supports walking between the centre, Malin, Rova and Vantačići. A car remains the most practical choice for inland Dubašnica villages and wider exploration of Krk.
