Valun is a small fishing and former farming village on the southern shore of broad Cres Bay, about 15 kilometres from Cres town. Its houses descend in terraces towards the harbour, while cars remain in a parking area above the settlement, preserving the pedestrian atmosphere of the stone waterfront and narrow lanes. Present-day Valun only developed beside the sea in the late 17th century; the older village of Bućev stood higher on the slope near St Mark’s Church and the cemetery. The 11th-century Valun Tablet was discovered there. This bilingual, two-script gravestone carries Glagolitic and Latin texts and is now set into the parish church in central Valun. Pebble beaches lie on both sides of the village: Zdovica beside its tent campsite and Raca, reached along a coastal path. Small waterfront restaurants specialise in fish, Kvarner scampi and Cres olive oil. Valun rewards an unhurried visit: walk down from the parking area, see the tablet and Glagolitic lapidarium, eat beside the harbour, then spend the afternoon on one of the beaches.

Zdovica lies beside the small campsite of the same name, a few minutes on foot from the harbour, and offers a pebble shore with patches of shade. The campsite accepts tents only: cars, motorcycles and caravans remain outside, while luggage is carried in handcarts. Listed facilities include beach volleyball, boules, basketball and a children’s playground, although the official page currently marks the campsite as temporarily closed. On the opposite side of Valun is Raca, also called Boksit, reached on foot along the coast; smaller wild coves continue beyond Cape Travnica.

Walk down from the parking area to the harbour and begin inside the parish Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, where the Valun Tablet is built into a wall. A few steps away, pause at the Glagolitic lapidarium, a display of copies of significant inscriptions from Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia. Then follow the coast either towards Zdovica or in the opposite direction to Raca; both are pebble beaches but offer different perspectives across Cres Bay. For a harder extension, continue beyond Cape Travnica towards wilder coves or use Valun as a stop on the Cres–Grmov–Lubenice–Valun–Cres cycling circuit.
Cars remain in the parking area above Valun because the harbour and lower village are pedestrianised. The same arrangement applies to Zdovica campsite guests: cars, motorcycles and caravans cannot enter, and luggage is transferred from the parking area in handcarts. The walk to the waterfront is short but uphill on the return, which can be awkward with heavy suitcases or a pushchair. The campsite’s official page states that parking is charged according to the concessionaire’s separate price list, but it does not publish a confirmed 2026 rate, so the amount must be checked at the entrance.
Drivers reach Cres on Jadrolinija’s Brestova–Porozina or Valbiska–Merag ferries. In 2026, Brestova–Porozina operates year-round and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. From the ferry ports, island roads lead towards Cres town before a branch descends into Valun Bay. The county’s 2026 public-transport plan lists route 203 between Cres and Valun, but departures should be checked before travel because island frequencies are limited. The bus stops above the pedestrian centre, where cars also remain; the final approach to the harbour, church and restaurants is made downhill on foot.
The Valun Tablet is embedded in a wall of the parish Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in central Valun.
Cars are left in the parking area above the village, with the waterfront and Zdovica campsite reached on foot.
The nearest are the pebble beaches of Zdovica and Raca, also known as Boksit, on opposite sides of the village.
No. The campsite is intended for tents only, and its official page currently marks it as temporarily closed.
