Fort Brioni Minor was built on Mali Brijun as part of Austro-Hungarian Pula’s second defensive belt. Constructed from 1895 to 1900, it controlled the northern approach to Pula harbour through the Fažana Channel. The elongated complex, roughly 175 by 90 metres, was cut into the rock, and its passages, massive walls and artillery positions make its military purpose immediately legible. A torpedo-launching battery was added nearby in 1910. Austrian-Hungarian, Italian, German and Yugoslav forces occupied the fort until 1990, yet much of its original fabric survives. Visits are arranged through the Brijuni National Park’s visitor programmes.
