Brijuni is a national park formed by an archipelago of 14 islands and islets off the western Istrian coast opposite Fažana. The protected area includes land, surrounding sea and seabed, with Veliki Brijun as the largest and most visited island. Within a compact area are Mediterranean landscapes, archaeological sites ranging from prehistory to Roman times, historic villas, museum collections and traces of modern political history. Regular visits generally begin with a boat from Fažana, after which Veliki Brijun can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on an organized tour. A fuller visit combines natural scenery with sites such as Kastrum, Verige and the island’s museum displays.
