Cerovlje is a small municipal centre in inland Istria, roughly nine kilometres northeast of Pazin beside the Pazinčica watercourse. Its position on the old route linking Pazin with Buzet and Rijeka shaped the village, while the arrival of the Divača–Pula railway in 1876 gave it greater regional importance. Cerovlje appears by name in the 1325 Istrian Demarcation and as Czerolach in a 1498 estate register. The parish church of the Assumption, built in 1804 and enlarged in 1910, rises above the settlement. Beside the road, the 15th-century Holy Trinity chapel preserves traces of wall paintings and a Glagolitic inscription associated with the local priest Ivan Bubić. The village also makes a practical base for exploring Draguć, Paz, Gologorica and the remains of Possert, all tied to the former frontier between Venetian and Austrian territories. Cerovlje’s appeal is therefore distinctly inland: dispersed hill villages, small churches and the layered cultural landscape of central Istria replace the usual coastal itinerary.
Cerovlje occupies the Pazinčica valley between the Pazin area and the hills rising toward Draguć, Paz and Učka. Transport has always shaped its identity: the road toward Buzet and Rijeka encouraged growth, and the railway completed in 1876 made the village a more important point in central Istria. Nearby ravines and a chain of medieval strongholds recall the former borderlands of the County of Pazin. Unlike Istria’s compact hilltop towns, Cerovlje stretches along its transport routes, while the wider municipality encompasses a scattered collection of historic villages and hamlets.

Begin at the 15th-century Holy Trinity chapel beside the road and railway crossing, where a millstone bearing a Glagolitic inscription by the priest Ivan Bubić is built into the south façade. Continue uphill to the parish church of the Assumption, erected in 1804 and extended in 1910. For a broader circuit through the municipality, drive to Draguć for its painted churches or continue toward Paz and the ruins of Possert Castle. Anglers can also investigate freshwater fishing at the ponds around Cerovlje, after checking the locally applicable permits and rules.
Cerovlje is connected by road with Pazin and Buzet and lies about nine kilometres northeast of Pazin. The municipality is crossed by the D3 state road and the Ž5013 and Ž5046 county roads, which link the valley with its dispersed villages. Cerovlje station stands on Istria’s railway toward Pula; trains first passed through the settlement in 1876. Rail passengers should consult Croatian Railways’ 2025/2026 timetable, valid until 12 December 2026, because several timetable amendments have been issued during the operating year.
Cerovlje is an inland village in central Istria, around nine kilometres northeast of Pazin, so it has no seaside beaches of its own.
The principal local sights are the Holy Trinity chapel, with surviving paintings and a Glagolitic inscription, and the parish church of the Assumption.
The Divača–Pula railway reached Cerovlje in 1876 and increased the settlement’s transport importance.
