St Michael’s Fortress occupies a steep height above the old town, on the site closely associated with the origins of medieval Šibenik. Documentary references reach back to the eleventh century, and the fortress took its name from the former Church of St Michael within its walls. The ramparts overlook the city, harbour, St Anthony’s Channel and the Šibenik archipelago. Following revitalisation in 2014, the interior gained an open-air stage seating more than a thousand people, so the fortress now works both as a historic site and a contemporary cultural venue. Expect an uphill approach through the old town and a fair number of steps.
