Barone Fortress was raised in 1646 on Vidakuša hill alongside St John’s Fortress, when Šibenik faced an Ottoman threat during the Candian War. Construction was organised by Baron Christoph Martin von Degenfeld, after whom the fortress was later named, and citizens completed Barone and St John’s in only 58 days. The new defensive system proved crucial during the major siege of 1647. Today Barone combines preserved fortifications, broad city views and modern historical interpretation, including augmented-reality content. Late afternoon is particularly rewarding because the elevated position makes the relationship between the old town, harbour and archipelago easy to read from the ramparts.
