The Church of St Chrysogonus belongs to the earliest surviving layer of Šibenik’s sacred architecture. Built in the twelfth century in the Romanesque style, it is regarded as the oldest preserved church building in the city. It remained in religious use until the Second World War, when it was badly damaged. After restoration it acquired a cultural role and now functions as the St Chrysogonus Gallery within the Šibenik City Museum. That change of use is part of the interest of a visit: the restrained medieval architecture can be read both as a historical monument and as a setting for contemporary exhibitions.
