St John’s Fortress was built in 1646 on high ground above the old town to close a dangerous landward approach to Šibenik. The design is associated with military engineer Antonio Leni, while local citizens supplied labour for construction that, together with Barone, was completed in only 58 days. In 1647 the new fortress withstood a major Ottoman siege. The complex includes sections known as the Star and the Pincers, and a comprehensive restoration completed in 2022 introduced an educational campus and interpretation facilities. At roughly 115 metres above sea level, the position offers expansive views, although reaching it involves a noticeable uphill walk.
