Narona occupied the area of present-day Vid near Metković, on the right bank of the Neretva and the southeastern slope of a hill. It grew from a Greek trading post into a Roman stronghold and gained colonial status as Colonia Iulia Narona in the time of Caesar or Augustus. Walls and towers defended the town, while inscriptions and excavated remains attest to temples, baths and a theatre. The forum’s foremost monument was the Temple of Augustus, built around 10 BC, where 17 statues of emperors, imperial family members and deities were found. In Late Antiquity, Narona was a bishopric with three basilicas; urban life ended in the early 7th century.
