The Archaeological Museum Narona stands on Naronski trg in Vid, above the Plećašove štale site where the remains of a Roman temple, the Augusteum, were uncovered in 1995 and 1996. Excavations revealed 17 marble sculptures of life-size and larger-than-life scale, including Roman emperors and members of their families. Founded in 2005, the museum opened on 18 May 2007 as Croatia’s first purpose-built in-situ museum. Its permanent display brings together the preserved temple architecture and outstanding finds from investigations of ancient Narona. A visit offers the unusual chance to encounter a Roman city’s cult space and its artefacts in their original archaeological setting.
