St Saviour’s stands just inside Pile Gate at the beginning of Stradun. Built as a votive church after the earthquake of 1520, it was completed in 1528 under the direction of the Korčula master Petar Andrijić. The trefoil outline of the façade and its prominent stone inscription identify both the building’s Renaissance character and the reason for its construction. St Saviour’s survived the earthquake of 1667, making it a useful comparison with Dubrovnik’s subsequently rebuilt churches. Close to the city entrance, visitors can examine its façade alongside the Large Onofrio Fountain and Franciscan monastery without climbing into the upper streets.
