Pile Gate is best understood by walking from Brsalje towards Stradun: a stone bridge, the former drawbridge section and two gateways lead gradually into the walled city. The outer entrance has a semicircular tower, while the inner passage is distinguished by its Gothic arch. A figure of St Blaise above the gateway connects this approach with Dubrovnik’s patron saint, whose image also appears elsewhere on the defences. Beyond the passage, the Large Onofrio Fountain marks the western end of Stradun. Pile is consequently a useful landmark for arrivals, separating the bus stops and Brsalje outside from the old centre’s pedestrian spine.
