Fort Royal stands on Glavica, Lokrum’s highest ground, above the monastery, gardens and coastal paths. French forces began building after their arrival in the Dubrovnik area in 1806, and the Austrian administration later enlarged the defences substantially. The circular main structure connects with an outer wall and bastions, revealing a different Lokrum from the greenery beside Portoč landing. From this height, the island’s strategic relationship with Dubrovnik and its maritime approaches becomes clear. Allow for an uphill walk as a distinct part of an island outing: Fort Royal occupies the interior, rather than the waterfront beside the landing stage.
