Revelin stands outside Dubrovnik’s main circuit of walls on the approach to Ploče Gate. Its massive, irregularly four-sided structure is separated from the town by the former defensive ditch. From the bridge towards Ploče, the relationship between the fortress, the land entrance and the eastern harbour is especially clear. Much of its present form belongs to the major strengthening of the city’s defences in the sixteenth century. Archaeological exhibitions of Dubrovnik Museums also occupy space inside Revelin, adding excavated objects to the architectural visit. Its terrace occasionally serves as a Dubrovnik Summer Festival stage, while the route below continues towards the Lazareti.
