Fort Imperial occupies Mount Srđ above Dubrovnik, with an outlook across the city and sea. French forces built the fort in the early nineteenth century to control the approaches from the north. Its substantial walls and hilltop position explain the military purpose before visitors enter the exhibition rooms. Part of Imperial houses the Homeland War Museum, with material concerning the Dubrovnik area between 1991 and 1995. The fort is therefore both an architectural monument and a setting for the events examined inside. On a visit to Srđ, combine its exterior with the museum rather than limiting the stop to the panorama beside the cable car.
