Varaždin City Museum opened on 16 November 1925 in the Old Town fortress and grew from an initial collection into a multidisciplinary institution with archaeological, historical, ethnographic, cultural-historical, natural-history and art departments. Its displays are not confined to a single building: the museum uses the Old Town, Sermage Palace, Herzer Palace and other spaces in the historic centre. A visit can therefore range from one focused exhibition to several hours across multiple locations. In 2026 the Old Town is temporarily closed for an energy-renovation project, while the institution continues programmes in its other venues according to current museum notices.
