Koprivnica is Podravina’s historic centre, a town where the outline of former Renaissance fortifications can still be read in a green ring of parks and surviving earthworks. The adjoining Zrinski and Jelačić squares provide the most attractive introduction, framed by Historicist and Secession-era buildings, the town hall and a wooden music pavilion dating from 1896. Nearby Esterova Street contains Saint Nicholas Parish Church, the Koprivnica City Museum and the Franciscan complex of Saint Anthony of Padua. Franciscans reached Koprivnica around 1290, while the present masonry monastery was built between 1675 and 1685. Modern Koprivnica is equally associated with Podravka, its Food Museum in the former slaughterhouse and a deeply rooted everyday cycling culture. The surrounding excursion circuit leads to Hlebine, famous for Podravina naïve art, the Ivan Sabolić Sculpture Gallery in Peteranec, Lake Šoderica and the Drava landscape. Koprivnica thus combines a walkable centre, military and civic heritage, naïve art and Podravina cooking, represented in town by venues such as Pivnica Kraluš, whose interior features work by local artists.
Koprivnica is Podravina’s county seat, named after the Koprivnica stream, which appears in records as early as 1207. It gained the rank of a free royal town through a charter issued by Louis I on 4 November 1356. By the mid-16th century it had become a fortified captaincy within the Slavonian Military Frontier; the present-day town park follows the line of its former moats and ramparts. Esterova Street and the area around Dr Leander Brozović Square reveal much of the old core. Modern Koprivnica is closely associated with Podravka, the food company founded in 1947, while the Budapest–Koprivnica–Zagreb railway has connected the town since 1870.

The Franciscan monastery and Church of Saint Anthony of Padua preserve the legacy of an order present in Koprivnica since around 1290; the masonry monastery dates from 1675–1685, while the church contains Baroque furnishings and the Chapel of Saint Salvator. Saint Nicholas Parish Church acquired its present form before 1657, and a rare Renaissance funerary stele from 1608 is set into an outside wall. The city park occupies former defensive ditches and contains a wooden pavilion made in 1896. The synagogue on Svilarska Street was erected in 1875, while the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows at Grantule dates from 1737.

Explore Koprivnica on foot, beginning at Zrinski Square and the city park with its 1896 music pavilion. Follow Esterova Street to the Koprivnica City Museum on Trg dr. Leandera Brozovića, then continue to Saint Nicholas Church and the Franciscan Church of Saint Anthony. On Zrinski Square, visit the Mijo Kovačić Gallery, one of the city’s direct links with Podravina naïve art. Spend the afternoon cycling a loop around Koprivnica’s recreational outskirts. Finish at Pivnica Kraluš, where stained glass by Josip Turković depicts Podravina daily life and other Koprivnica artists helped shape the interior.
Pivnica Kraluš stands out for its distinctly Koprivnica interior: Zlatko Kauzlarić-Atač and Josip Fluksi contributed to the design, while Turković’s stained glass shows scenes from Podravina life. Podravska Klet links both its name and menu with the regional identity and offers a more local setting than a pizzeria or fast-food stop. Restaurant Zlatan at Varaždinska cesta 177a serves traditional dishes and can prepare spit-roasted lamb or veal under the bell by prior arrangement. Kalimero, established in 2000, specialises in wood-fired pizza, while Restaurant Zrinski and Pizzeria Grof operate at Novi Brežanec 6.
