The Franciscans have been present in Varaždin for centuries, and the present Church of St John the Baptist was erected in the 17th century on the site of an older Franciscan complex. The church belongs to the Early Baroque period, while its bell tower, about 54.5 metres high, is one of the tallest and most conspicuous in the city. The monastery and church stand on Franciscan Square in the pedestrian centre. A visit combines easily with Korzo, Patačić Palace and other Baroque buildings. The exterior clearly shows how the church shapes the square, while the interior reflects the richer sacred furnishings and the long Franciscan tradition.
